Week #11!

What did you do this past week?

This past week, I’ve been working on Phase 3 for our project. I had meetings with my group over Zoom and I have been working on our Filtering implementation.

What’s in your way?

I have taken a back-end role in my team, so in consequence, I haven’t really had to run our website locally so far. Now that I’m helping out the front-end on the filtering function, I had to figure out how to use npm to run the website locally to view changes. For days, I kept getting errors on npm install and npm start and it was very frustrating. I read through a lot of stackoverflow posts, and finally got it to work!

What will you do next week?

Next week, I hope to finish up the filtering implementation, and add many more back-end tests before the Phase 3 deadline on Thursday. I also want to update our Postman API and our Postman tests.

What was your experience of SQL?

SQL seems really useful for dealing with data. I need to get used to the way the code is written -it still seems pretty foreign to me! I have had no experience with SQL before this semester, so I think it’ll be a little bit of a learning curve but I know I’ll get it.

What was your experience of the ethics material?

I find ethics a fascinating topic. A lot of the ideas brought up in the material is stuff I’ve discussed in previous courses. I’ve taken a Psychology course that spent a lot of time focusing on the Prisoner’s dilemma problem mentioned in the PowerPoint. I think it’s really important that we, as students, start thinking about ethics now before we graduate and make our mark on the world.

What made you happy this week?

Debugging is a pain, so finally getting our website to run locally for me was definitely the crowning moment of my week!

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

Don’t forget that office hours still exist! My group and I were on a Zoom call this past week trying to decide which path to follow to continue our project when we remembered that it was currently lab hours! We got an answer immediately, just a Zoom call away! It’s a little hard to not be able to meet in person anymore, but all the tools for success still exist!

Good luck on finishing up Phase 3!
